I was up by 4am, knowing that moonrise was at 4:51am. The 1st thing I checked was my weather radar app to see if it there was clear skies & it was. I wanted to be able to be out there before moonrise so there wasn't any additional light pollution from the moon.
Made it to Sandy Beach parking lot & pulled out my iPhone app to see where the Milky Way was & it was too far to the left. I would have to shoot back into the parking lot with all the lights. I knew that was a bad idea so jumped back into my car headed off to Makapuu at the top of the road & thought it would be over the water but , much to my surprise it was behind me over the mountains.
Jumped back into my car & drove down into the Makapuu Beach Park parking lot, where I was able to shoot back towards the mountains & I finally got a half decent shot of the Milky way. About 10 minutes into shooting, the clouds moved in & covered the stars!
In this shot I wanted to capture the lighthouse lights reflecting on the ocean & still be able to see the body of the Milky Way. If you look closely off the the left of the lighthouse you can see the moon rising over the mountain. In hind sight I should have taken a 4 image pano to get a wider spread of the entire sky! Maybe next week.
Aloha a hui hou my friends!
